Leap year on Friday was fun, my students couldn't quite get their heads round the fact I am only seven!!!

The dinner ladies even made me a cake with seven candles, bless them!

I feel so much older now! ;-)
Almost like a proper grown up (........but not quite)

ENCAUSTIC WAX PAINTING JOURNAL
Okay, so quite a lot of people have been asking me about wax painting since I joined DA and because I like sharing I thought I'd write a quick journal about it which might help people who are inquisitive about the technique or feel they would like to give it a go.
You can find the journal here: [link]

Happy New Year, this is my first journal of 2008.

I wrote a huge long winded journal yesterday and the damn computer froze before I could submit it.... I lost my patience. You'll be happy to know this will be the shortened version ;-)

So...... 2008 :-)
I am currently on half term and blissfully trying to ignore the amount of marking I will have to do when I return to school next week. I am spending this week doing as many fun, creative endeavours as it is possible for one little pixie to do!

Firstly I did a painting yesterday, first one this month and I now feel extremely tranquil :meditate:

Secondly, the weekend before last I went to a bead fair (yes, you guessed it, lots of old ladies getting excited over crafting stuff and yarns!)
There were soooooo many nice beads, and a guy from Tuffnell Glass demoing how to make glass beads with a hot-head bunsen burner and gas canister.
£100 later and I am now the proud owner of my very own glass bead making kit..... Oh all the fun in the world to be had!!! My lovely fella bought me a really cool workbench for valentines (which beats chocolates and perfume any day of the week :D) and I've been making some mis-shapen, ahem "unique" beads :-)

So that's about it... I'm off to do some more bead making. Watch this space and hopefully I'll have some piccies to show for my endeavours for you soon.

I'm going to be 7 years old at the end of the month. Woohoo for leap year babes across the world

Hope everyone is well and enjoying 2008.

Ancient Stone Whispers To Me

Journal extract from my travels this summer as I spent time in Siem Reap, Cambodia, temple hopping. I have been dreaming of returning to these temples for the past eight years.

29-07-07
Today started off strangely:
We began the day at sunrise at the Bayon (the temple with many columns of faces). I have never found it eerie like so many others, but in the dark it took on a much darker power. Cats - the supposed guardians of the underworld - were marching along the front wall of the ruin, occasionally turning to look at us, and we felt it was not our time to enter.... Perhaps the night should belong to the stones themselves. As the sky lightened the silhouettes began to reveal their many details and we began to enter the complex of dishevelled stones. Even then the corridors hinted at strange shadows, so we sat and gave the stones their time. As the light grew the temple felt more welcoming so we headed into the heart of the ruin and started to draw. I don't think I will ever get bored of drawing those incredible stone faces with their wise smiles.

Afterwards my travel companion headed back to the guest house and I headed into Ta Prohm temple to do some painting. (Ta Prohm, formerly renowned for it's trees, one in particular named the Elephant Tree, is since 2001 better known for being a set for the first Tomb Raider movie. Great temple, shame the film was so rubbish!) It is an incredible temple with the trees all intertwined with the stones, pushing down on the ruins. The trees look so sad, their branhces and roots like disfigured limbs trapped between piles of fallen ancient stone. I found a place to sit and look across at the incredible Elephant Tree (aptly named because the trunk and roots look like elephant trunks and legs) I began to paint. I'm not sure how many photos I appeared in that afternoon suffice to say many tourists wanted their picture taken with the crazy English artistgetting heat stroke, sun burn and literally dripping with sweat - it's amazing what we will do in the name of art! It was a really tranquil 2 hours and I returned to the guest house feeling like I had quenched my artistic thirst for another day.

A sad development since my last visit here eight years ago is the childrens rapid focus on tourism now. As today was our last day at the temples we decided to finish it at sunset Angkor Wat. When we arrived we were bombarded by some extremely aggressive and arrogant children. They were really rude and made Kel and me both angry and sad.... However when we had walked across the long walkway towards the main temple complex we decided to head across the grass to one of two smaller ruins situated either side of the walkway. Angkor is bustling with thousands of tourists throughout the day but especially at sunset and yet there we sat on this ancient ruin all by ourselves until we were joined by four of the most beautiful children. Three older kids taking it in turns to carry a weel fed but rather snotty one year old. They were the children I had longed to see and had almost believed were a thing of the past, and it was so refreshing to see that they were simply content to come and sit with us.

Looking at the unfolding scene of hundreds of people ambling along the walkway, we had our own little piece of serenity, and it was the perfect way to once again say goodbye to the temples I love so much.

In a rush as per usual. Off to Thailand and Cambodia tomorrow morning with one of my best friends. She's never been to Asia before and has burst into excited fits of jumping up and down on my bed this evening!!! She's going to be uncontrollable when we get out there!!!

So, I'll be sure to take lots of photos and bore you all to tears with tales of travelling when I return. Hopefully then I'll get a chance to actually look through some of the amazing art which keeps landing in my dev watch.
Chao for now,
The Pixie xxx
